2023 UCSB Physics REU

 

In Summer 2023, we ran an in-person REU program with 8 students participating.
 
 
Ivan Abreu Paniagua from University of Rhode Island (RI) did a project in Astronomy. See Ivan's REU paper report and REU Symposium Talk. Ivan plans to present a poster on his REU work at the AAS meeting in New Orleans in January 2024.
 
Lillia Hammond from Amherst College (MA) did a project in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics. See Lillia's REU paper report and REU Symposium Talk.
 
Joanne Kauffman from El Camino College (CA) did a project in Experimental Particle Physics. See Joanne's REU paper report and REU Symposium Talk.
 
Katherine Kudla from Providence College (RI) did a project in Astronomy. See Katie's REU paper report and REU Symposium Talk. Katie plans to present an iposter on her REU work at AAS meeting in New Orleans in January 2024. Katie will start a Ph.D at UCSB in Fall 2024 - Congratulations, Katie!

Georgia McSwain from Washington and Lee University (VA) did a project in Physics of Living Matter. See Georgia's REU paper report and REU Symposium Talk. Georgia will start a Ph.D at Cornell University in Fall 2024 - Congratulations, Georgia!
 
Manisha Parthasarathy from Rutgers University (NJ) did a project in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics/Materials. See Manisha's REU paper report and REU Symposium Talk. Manisha plans to present a poster on her REU work at the 2024 APS March Meeting in Minneapolis. Manisha will start a Ph.D at Columbia University in Fall 2024 - Congratulations, Manisha!
 
Drew Rosenblum from Washington University in St. Louis (MO) did a project in Gravity Theory. See Drew's REU paper report and REU Symposium Talk. Drew will join Cambridge University (UK) for the Part III in Fall 2024, and after that start a Ph.D at University of Pennsylvania - Congratulations, Drew!

 

2022 UCSB Physics REU

Jacob VanArsdale from Colorado State University (CO) did a project in Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics. See Jacob's REU paper report and REU Symposium Talk.  Jacob was awarded a Goldwater Scholarship in 2023. Jacob will start his Ph.D at MIT in Fall 2024 - Congratulations, Jacob!

2021 UCSB Physics REU

 

Due to ongoing covid-19 restrictions, we ran a remote program in Summer 2021, with a cohort of 8 students participating remotely.
 
Brian Bauer from Siena College (NY) did a project in Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics. See Brian's REU paper report and REU Symposium Talk. Brian is now working at the Lighting Research Center at Rennsealer Polytechnic Institute.
 
Josh Breckenridge from University of Cincinnati (OH) did a project in Astronomy. See Josh's REU paper report and REU Symposium Talk. Josh is now doing a Ph.D at University of California, Santa Barbara.
 
Beck Dacus from Amherst College (MA) did a project in Astronomy. See Beck's REU paper report and REU Symposium Talk. Beck is now doing a Ph.D at University of California, San Diego.
 
Naunet Leonhardes-Barboza from Wellesley College (MA) did a project in Observational Astronomy. See Naunet's REU paper report and REU Symposium Talk. Naunet's REU work was included in a publication (accepted in ApJ) that she has co-authored with Prof. Martin and her group. Naunet will start a Ph.D at UC Santa Cruz in Fall 2024 - Congratulations, Naunet!
 
Joi Malone from Spelman College (GA) did a project in Soft Matter Physics. See Joi's REU paper report and REU Symposium Talk. Joi will graduate in 2024 and plans to go to graduate school.
 
Khanh Pham from University of California, Berkeley (CA) did a project in Condensed Matter Physics. See Khanh's REU paper report and REU Symposium Talk. Khanh is now doing a Ph.D at Harvard University.
 
Emily Pottebaum from Iowa State University (IA) did a project in Experimental Particle Physics. See Emily's REU paper report and REU Symposium Talk. Emily is now doing a Ph.D at Yale University.
 
Abel Shiferaw from Georgia Institute of Technology (GA) did a project in Gravity Theory. See Abel's REU paper report and REU Symposium Talk. Abel is now doing a Ph.D at University of California, Berkeley.

 

 

2020 UCSB Physics REU

 

Due to covid-19, we ran a remote program in Summer 2020 with a small cohort of students participating remotely.

Matthew Dittrich from The Citadel in South Carolina did a project in Experimental Particle Physics, and worked on "Catching Cosmic Rays": See Matthew's REU paper report and REU Symposium Talk.  Matthew is now doing a Ph.D at University of Florida, Gainesville.

Addison Hartman from Amherst College in Massachusetts did a project in Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics, and worked on "Simulating Quantum Dynamics": See Addison's REU paper report and REU Symposium Talk. Addison is now doing a Ph.D at University of Colorado, Boulder.

Claire Keckley from Tulane University in Louisiana did a project in Gravity Theory, and worked on "Quantum Properties of Black Holes": See Claire's REU paper report and REU Symposium Talk. Claire graduated in 2023 and is currently working for the Gulf Scholars Program.
